CHAPTER

THREE

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

Reeves felt hands grasping under his arms, pulling him to his feet. Coughing grit and bitter-tasting phlegm from his mouth, he steadied himself against the person who had helped him and forced his eyes to open. He’d hope to see Major Kane, but his heart sank as he instead found himself looking at the panic-stricken face of an emergency crew worker.

“Are you injured, Commander Reeves?” the emergency worker - a smoke-tarnished Bukkan male - asked.

“I’m fine, go and help the others,” Reeves said, slapping the worker on the shoulder then ushering him toward people who were more in need of assistance.

Hacking more black gunge onto the ground, Reeves then took his first look at the epicenter of the explosion. Another apartment block was crumbling and on fire. Forcefields were barely managing to hold the structure in place, and Reeves could see that the detonation had ripped open the deck between residential districts. Debris and the blown-apart remains of human residents had tumbled through to the Bukkan district below, adding to the devastation and body count. Reeves’ hands closed into fists and he clenched his teeth so tightly that the grit and debris in his mouth was ground to powder. Serena Shepard had crossed the line. Now, she and her New Earther zealots would receive the same brutal treatment he’d previously reserved only for the Sa’Nerra and Garrett’s most degenerate lieutenants. Before that, Reeves first had to find Kane and stop Mid Town from descending further into chaos. Raising his left hand, he activated his buzz and opened a channel to his XO.

“Katee, do you read me?” Reeves called out, needing to raise his voice to a near-shout to be heard over the clamor of emergency crews, crackling fires and crumbling structures.

He waited, but there was no answer. Cursing, Reeves checked his buzz to make sure the connection had been established, and saw an error message flashing across the screen. It read: ‘Critical Device Failure. All Functions Offline’. Cursing again, he punched the device, shattering the flexible screen and causing the buzz to crackle and spark, then fizzle out completely.

Suddenly, Reeves felt a shiver run down his spine, as if someone had walked over his grave. Turning around, he saw a figure, barely visible through the dust and smoke. Whoever it was appeared to be watching him. Scowling, Reeves set off in pursuit, but the figure immediately bolted and vanished into the smoky gloom like a phantom.

“Commander!”

Reeves spun around again and saw Sergeant Axia Calera running toward him, trailed by two enforcers and two emergency crew workers. Casting a final anxious glance toward where the apparition had evaporated like steam, he strode out to meet his chief of security.

“Commander, we have found and deactivated two more explosive devices,” Calera said, showing no concern for Reeves’ wellbeing and getting straight to the point. “Our scans have detected a fifth and final device, but we have yet to reach it.” Calera then turned to one of the emergency workers and took something out of the woman’s hand.
